Canberra Raiders vs Manly Sea Eagles NRL Preview and Team News - Another close contest on the cards between Canberra and Manly

Three of the last four games between Manly and Canberra have been decided by two points or less, and with the way both teams are travelling, we might be in for another thrilling finish when these two top eight sides square off on Sunday afternoon.

Canberra have been the most improved team in the competition this season and have been sitting pretty in the top four since the opening round.

The Raiders are 5-1 and have only lost to Melbourne so far this season, but more importantly, they are much more disciplined. Indeed, Canberra have the best possession rate in the NRL and the best defence, keeping the Titans and Eels scoreless in their opening five rounds.

Defence has always been the issue in the nation’s capital, but Ricky Stuart has stated his side worked tirelessly in that department over the off-season, and the Raiders are already reaping the rewards.

Meanwhile, Manly saw their three-match winning streak snapped in controversial circumstances last week as they went down 12-10 to the Dragons and were denied a penalty in the dying stages to even the scores and take the game to golden point.

Regardless, Des Hasler has done a great job with Manly since his return to the club, and propelled them up to a current position of seventh after losing their opening two games. However, the loss of Tom Trbojevic for two months with a hamstring injury continues to hurt them.

As mentioned, there has barely been anything separating these two teams in recent times, and judging by their form over the last month, this clash should be another tight one. I think Canberra have more to call upon in attack and they’ve improved their defence tenfold this season - they should be able to edge this one out.

2019 NRL – Penrith Panthers vs South Sydney Rabbitohs Preview & Prediction

THE TEAM NEWS

PENRITH PANTHERS

Head Coach: Ivan Cleary

Starting 13: Aekins, Mansour, D. Watene-Zelezniak, Blake, M. Watene-Zelezniak, Maloney, Cleary, Tamou, Egan, Grant, Kikau, Yeo, Fisher-Harris – Interchanges: Katoa, Martin, Leota, Campbell-Gillard – Reserves: Luai, Ellis, Edwards, Fuimaono

Unavailable: Tyrone May, Sam McKendry, Frank Winterstein, Dean Whare

Penrith blew a 14-point lead late on against Cronulla as the Panthers allowed three tries in the final 16 minutes to fall to another defeat as their poor start to the season continued and their record stands at 2-4.

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak has been moved to the centres for the Panthers due to Dean Whare's injury with Caleb Aekins in at fullback meaning Dylan Edwards remains on the sidelines.

The Panthers have the worst completion rate in the NRL by a distance with just 67.7% so far this season and that is an obvious area where Penrith need to improve as they will struggle to win games if that number doesn’t increase.

SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS

Head Coach: Wayne Bennett

Starting 13: Johnston, Allan, Turner, Gagai, Graham, Walker, Reynolds, G. Burgess, Cook, T. Burgess, Sutton, S. Burgess, Murray – Interchanges: Tatola, Nicholls, Lowe, Knight – Reserves: Sironen, Tracey, Britt, Hiroti

Unavailable: Kurt Dillon, Adam Doueihi, Braidon Burns

South Sydney only just managed to overcome Canterbury last week with some serious improvements needed against the Panthers although the Rabbitohs will point to the Bulldogs’ spoiling tactics which slowed their game down significantly.

Souths have named the same 17 from last week's win but may once again choose to switch George Burgess to the bench before kick-off with Junior Tatola taking his place as has occurred in the previous two games.

The Rabbitohs have the most metres to their name so far this season with 10,240 at an average of 1706.6 a game with the forward pack an obvious strength for South Sydney and facing the team with the fewest in Penrith, Souths know if they are clinical they should win.

THE PREDICTION

Souths were left frustrated by the Bulldogs last week but they managed to edge their way to an ugly win. The Panthers will need to find some form and quickly as they surrendered the lead late on against Cronulla last week but the Rabbits should be too strong here and can come out on top. Having racked up the most metres in the NRL this season, they come up against a Penrith side with the least which is partly down to the number of errors they’re making. Unless the Panthers make serious improvements here, they will find themselves on the end of another defeat.

2019 NRL – Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs vs North Queensland Cowboys Preview & Prediction

THE TEAM NEWS

CANTERBURY-BANKSTOWN BULLDOGS

Head Coach: Dean Pay

Starting 13: Meaney, Okunbor, Holland, Hopoate, R. Smith, Cogger, Lewis, Tolman, Marshall-King, Ogden, Jackson, Harawira-Naera, Martin – Interchanges: Lichaa, Fualalo, Elliott, C. Smith – Reserves: Crichton, Montoya, Brown, Toomaga

Unavailable: Brandon Wakeham, Kieran Foran, Dylan Napa, Sauaso Sue

Canterbury came out second best of a low-quality game against South Sydney last week with the Rabbitohs able to edge it 6-14 with the Bulldogs still sitting at the foot of the ladder with just one win so far this season.

Rhyse Martin has again been selected to start by Bulldogs' head coach Dean Pay but could switch with Adam Elliott like they did last week whilst Renouf Toomaga is fit again and takes his place in the reserves.

Canterbury have only scored 70 points from their six games so far this season and that average of 11.7 points per game is the lowest in the NRL which highlights some of their early-season issues.
NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS

Head Coach: Paul Green

Starting 13: Martin, O’Neill, Kahu, Tuala, Hampton, Clifford, Morgan, Scott, Granville, McLean, Cooper, McGuire, Asiata – Interchanges: Baptiste, Hess, Bolton, Molo – Reserves: Jensen, Opacic, Taumalolo, Dunn

Unavailable: Kyle Feldt, Murray Taulagi, Nene Macdonald

North Queensland claimed an important victory which was just their second win of the season as they saw off New Zealand Warriors in Auckland with a gutsy performance to beat the odds.

The Cowboys have named an unchanged line-up following last week's win but Jason Taumalolo is a surprise inclusion amongst the reserves and could be a late inclusion to make an early return from an MCL injury.

With 44 handling errors – an average of 7.3 per game – the Cowboys have the joint-third highest number in the NRL so far this season and is something they will need to improve upon moving forward.

THE PREDICTION

The Bulldogs have been criticised for their spoiling tactics last week and have been warned that they will be on the end of more penalties if they continue to employ them. The Cowboys may be the beneficiaries of that and coming off the back of a win, they can edge this one. They played well in Auckland last week and can back that up here with a second consecutive victory. They are capable of winning without get star lock Jason Taumalolo but if they can get him onto the field that will spell even more danger for the Bulldogs.

Cronulla Sharks vs Penrith Panthers: NRL Thursday night forecast

Ahuge NRL Round 6 Easter weekend gets underway with Cronulla welcoming Penrith to the Shire.
And I have to be honest – it’s nice to preview a Thursday night game that doesn’t involve the Brisbane Broncos. After three straight Thursday nights, I was starting to run low on Tevita Pangai Junior content.
Neither the Panthers or the Sharks have set the competition on fire this season, but games between these clubs are usually pretty good entertainment with plenty of spice.
This game is ninth versus 11th and while it’s still too early to write teams off, it’s a classic ‘four-point game’ that will come in handy for the winner when top eight spots are being decided.
Both teams are two wins from their five games but the Panthers need to make up a -41 points differential. There’s plenty of time for them to get that back if they can get their sputtering attack up and running.
Cronulla owns the recent history between these clubs. They’ve won six straight against Penrith and eight of the last ten, the most recent being the Sharks’ one-point win in week two of the 2018 finals. After a Valentine Holmes masterclass helped Cronulla bolt to an 18-0 lead, the Panthers chipped away and chipped away to tie the game before a Chad Townsend field goal put Cronulla’s nose in front when it counted.

Holmes is gone now, headed to the NFL preseason with the New York Jets. John Morris is the rookie head coach after Shane Flanagan was punted during an offseason Cronulla aren’t keen to look back on.
It has been a pretty rough opening month for the Sharks. Marquee signing Shaun Johnson is finding his feet after nursing a quadriceps injury, Matt Moylan has been out since Round 2 with a bad hamstring tear, veteran Paul Gallen is dinged up with rib troubles (he’ll need painkillers to get through this game) and much-maligned but actually quite good front rower Aaron Woods has broken his foot and will miss an extended period.
Talisman prop Andrew Fifita is also hobbled by a dodgy hamstring, but at the time of writing, he was named and good to go.
After a competitive opening 40 minutes last Saturday, Cronulla were routed by the Roosters at this venue, down 30 points to nil at one stage before scoring a few tries during junk time.
When you think about it, with the injuries they’ve had at key positions, it’s a decent effort by the Sharks to be in the position they are. Things could be much worse.
Penrith have been incredibly disappointing so far. There were high expectations for the mountain men from inside and outside Panthers Stadium, but their start to 2019 with a leaky defence and the NRL’s worst attack (scoring just 63 points) has baffled many observers. Their two wins are by a combined three points.
The Panthers gave the Gold Coast their first win of the season last week at Robina, unable to take advantage of their host’s defensive generosity and supplying a gift of their own via a 67th-minute penalty try for the decisive score.
This week, the Panthers announced prop James Tamou as club captain. It was an unexpected development with the season well underway because coach Ivan Cleary had already appointed with great fanfare a six-man leadership group featuring Tamou, Nathan Cleary, Josh Mansour, James Maloney, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Isaah Yeo.
At the press conference for Tamou’s appointment, Cleary explained his intention was always to have one captain, and Tamou had “effectively risen above and selected himself’ during the opening month of the season.
To many it’s a strange way to do business, but if that’s what works for them, I won’t judge.
New South Wales prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard has been relegated to the bench. It’s a bit of a wakeup call for RCG because even though his stats aren’t too different from 2018, Ivan Cleary obviously expects more than what he’s getting. Tim Grant will start in the 10 jersey.
These two make a lot of errors, averaging 14 each per game. They’ve both made bad errors at critical moments which have cost them dearly. Cronulla’s weather forecast for Thursday is glorious football weather, so – to break out a sporting cliche to great effect – whoever holds the ball wins the game.
Prediction
Even though these teams have struggled to date, they do seem to bring out the competitive beast in one another.
The Sharks are the favourite with the bookies and the tipsters, but if they lose focus for even ten minutes, Penrith will rack up the points and we’ll all be wondering why we were so worried about them.
Cronulla are capable of drawing Penrith into a grinder of a game, keeping them under wraps and getting the points in a classic Shire mauling.
